Etymology of the clinic's name

Martha-Maria Hospital Munich forms part of the Diakoniewerk Martha-Maria e.V religious association that owns dozens of hospitals, schools, hotels and churches all across Germany.

The names of Martha and Maria were taken from the Bible. The Bible tells a story of Martha and Maria, two sisters who were once visited by Jesus. While Martha was cooking food for the guest, Maria wasn't helping her sister, listening to Jesus instead. Martha scolded her sister for not helping her, however, Jesus said that Maria also did the right thing, listening to what the guest had to say. Thus, real mercy amounts to both helping and hearing.

The organization sees its mission as a contribution to the humanity of our society with the help of experts and volunteers.

History of the clinic

The clinic's history goes back to 1897, when a sanatorium for mentally ill patients was established here. During WWII, the sanatorium was converted into a military hospital, however, it was destroyed in an air strike in 1942. The hospital was forced to close down shortly after that.

After the war, the hospital opened its doors to patients once again: this time as a hospital for tuberculosis patients. In 1946, the clinic was handed over to the Diakoniewerk company that began to develop surgical specialties.

In 1967, the clinic was in talks to be acquired by Siemens, which wanted to build a retirement home. However, this project wasn't approved in the end.

Nowadays, the clinic is seen as a combination of different eras. Its oldest wings were built in the 19th century. The newest buildings were constructed in 1971. The original hospital building was reconstructed. It is protected by the state as a historic monument. In 2009, the clinic underwent total renovation.

The most effective surgeries and procedures

  • Surgery aided by neuromonitoring: it is helpful in the identification of the recurrent laryngeal nerve, allowing surgeons to assess nerve functionality during and at the end of surgical procedure.
  • Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP): a technique that combines the use of endoscopy and fluoroscopy to diagnose and treat certain problems of the biliary or pancreatic ductal systems.
  • Lobectomy, a surgery to remove one of the lobes of the lungs, and hemithyroidectomy, the removal of half of the thyroid gland.
  • Thyroidectomy: full removal of the thyroid.
