Helios Krefeld is a top-level full-service academic clinic at the Rhine-Westphalia University (Aachen), one of the nine best applied-science universities in Germany with very strong medicine and biology schools. The interdisciplinary approach and medical innovations help Helios Krefeld successfully handle even the most challenging cases.

Its staff knows how to get the most out of the newest medical technologies both for individual patients and systemwide. Patients have access to a cloud-based platform that stores the essential medical data, such as prescriptions, appointment times, and bills (that can be easily paid through a secure transfer system). This digitized data management system helps patients to focus on what matters most, i.e. their own health needs.

More about the clinic

The clinic takes care of as many as 50,000 inpatient and 70,000 outpatient cases annually with really impressive surgery success rates. Its most known specialties are neurology, vascular and spine surgery, and minimally invasive cancer surgery.

In 2018, it has achieved zero mortality for malignant colon tumor resection procedures. 98% of partial lung removals in cancer patients and 99.2% of coronary surgeries, including complex open surgeries (e. g. abdominal aorta aneurysm), were successful, and 96% of heart failure and 99.6% of urologic surgery patients (including kidney and pelvic organs' removal) have recovered.

The clinic achieved these outstanding results thanks to its staff expertise. Helios Krefeld professors top international ratings and lead national and European scientific communities. The clinic is equipped with the most advanced technologies and has been one of the first in Germany to employ hybrid surgery rooms, each worth more than 2.2 million euros. These rooms are designed for robot-assisted surgeries and 3D visualization. More than 200 million euros have been invested in the clinic since 2009.

The clinic has a dedicated center tasked with hospital hygiene and multidrug-resistant bacteria control matters, which explains the very low rate of postoperative infectious complications.

History

The foundation stone for the Krefeld Hospital was laid on April 29, 1845. The hospital with 88 beds opened its doors three years later. During the WWII the building was greatly damaged. Soon thereafter it was restored, and its modernization continued. The first centralized anesthesia department in West Germany, headed by Manfred Koerner until 1985, was created in 1958.

A new surgical department with 18 operating rooms, worth 34.5 million euros was opened in 2005. And in 2007, the new Helios owner decided to rebuild most of the hospital. More than 200 million euros were spent on modernization. It took five years before the grand opening in 2014. Nowadays patients can enjoy a modern multi-functional facility with plenty of space and light, glass walls, easy access and environmentally friendly materials that contribute to faster recovery.

A specialized artificial lung facility department was opened in the middle of 2016 for patients who do not need intensive care.
