Since its foundation 25 years ago, the Leipzig Heart Center has become a recognized leader in cardiology, heart surgery and radiology. It applies an interdisciplinary approach, which means that every patient is examined not just by one doctor, but by a Heart Team, that includes cardiologists, heart surgeons and arrhythmology experts.

The clinic also actively employs automation, digital treatment technology, big data analysis, machine learning and AI to make prognosis for high risk patients.

More about the clinic

The Heart Center Leipzig handles almost 18,000 outpatient and more than 25,000 inpatient cases every year. The patients come to the clinic for its extensive expertise in cardiology and heart surgery that leads to stable high survival rates, including the most challenging cases.

In 2019, 93.1% of myocardial infraction patients of Helios Leipzig have successfully recovered. The average rate for Germany is 91.5%. Aortic valve replacement mortality for the same period was zero.

In 2015, the Leipzig Heart Institute (LHI) was founded at the clinic. This institute works on new methods and their rapid implementation in the fields of cardiovascular therapy and surgery, cardiology and electrophysiology. The Institute is headed by Gerhard Hindricks.

Medical Director of the Heart Center Leipzig and Chief Physician of the Arrhythmology Department. 40 researchers of the Institute also conduct international non-clinical and clinical studies in laboratories, offices and 2 operating rooms with a total area of 800 square meters. Its surgeons have at their disposal the most up-to-date equipment specifically for scientific research, including a robotic-assisted surgery da Vinci system. Close cooperation of research facilities and medical practitioners enables quick implementation of the results into practice.

Advanced Heart Surgery Center

The clinic deals with the most complex cases requiring surgery, and yet its survival rates are consistently above both local and European standards. Over the last 25 years, its doctors and researchers achieved major breakthroughs in cardiology and developed more than 40 unique surgery techniques. The main focus is on minimally invasive procedures, risks and complications reduction, and new technologies. In 1999, the clinic was the first in the world to create a robotic-assisted heart operating room.

The center collaborates with the best international clinics and experts worldwide. Since 2017, the clinic’s patients are operated by such world-renowned experts as Michael Borger (President of the American Association for Heart Surgery, former Director of the Cardiovascular Institute at Columbia University Medical Center in New York), Holger Tiele (University of Lubeck) and Sergey Leontiev (Heart Center Leipzig, student and successor of Professor Mohr).
