Helios Erfurt is a full-service clinic in Erfurt, a historic city in the very heart of Germany.
The clinic has 12 cancer centers certified by the German Cancer Society. In addition to practicing medicine, its doctors are involved in research and work on new cancer therapies. The Erfurt clinic is best known for its pulmonary, neurosurgery, and hematologic neoplasia (blood cancer) centers.
More about the clinic
Helios Erfurt treats approximately 115,000 outpatients and 54,000 inpatients every year. Its staff consists of more than 2,500 medical professionals, including about five hundred physicians.
Last year, it treated 1,314 lung cancer cases. 99% of cancer-related lung removal surgeries were successful, while the generally expected success rate is 80%. The clinic has achieved zero mortality rate after intestinal surgeries, such as removal of the large intestine and rectum. Over fifty percent of total kidney removals have been laparoscopic, while the national average for these minimally invasive procedures is approximately 35%. On average, the clinic performs 85 operations daily.
Physicians from various specialty fields meet on a regular basis to discuss individualized treatment strategies for every patient. Every week, the clinic holds 10 conferences in a variety of fields, such as sarcoma, leukosis, leukemia, skin, lung and other cancers, as well as children's cancers.
Helios Erfurt is also known for its successes in treating older cancer patients. Just one example: in 2020, a 85-year old esophageal cancer patient underwent successful surgery using a da Vinci system and was discharged one week later. Another intestinal cancer patient, 82-year old at the time of surgery, was successfully operated using a da Vinci system and was released in a matter of days. Da Vinci is a surgical system with four robotic arms that ensures accurate 3D visual guidance for minimally invasive procedures. An important advantage of the da Vinci system is that the operating surgeon is in control, while the size of incisions is minimized.
Since 2018, all nurses and physicians use a centralized electronic document control system that contains patients' medical records, including treatment plans, test results and vital signs, such as body temperature, blood pressure and pulse. Such coordination between direct care specialists and physicians is very important for the transparency of treatment procedures.
History
Clinic Erfurt was based on the municipal hospital, founded in 1880. At that time, there already were a Catholic and a Protestant hospital in the town, but their capacity was not enough.
In the 1920s, a three-story Surgery Center campus was built, which was the most advanced building across Germany.
On September 7, 1954, the Ministry of Health inaugurated the Medical Academy at the medical care center.
By 1998, the clinic received new campuses for Nuclear Medicine and Radiation Therapy departments. In 2002, new building for the Surgery Center was commissioned. Now all surgical departments were united under the same roof.
The Emergency Care Center was reconstructed in the first half of 2013. The center received a new waiting room, as well as examination and treatment rooms. In early 2016, a hybrid operating room was put in service, where radiologists, vascular surgeons and cardiologists could all work together.
