Helios Schwerin is the only regional and one of the very few clinics in Germany certified by the German Cancer Society as an intestinal, stomach and pancreatic cancer center at the same time. The clinic has a total of 10 certified cancer centers that go beyond oncology and rely on interdisciplinary teams. The wide range of medical disciplines covered by its highly specialized departments and centers brings together the experience and knowledge of many experts, for example, during interdisciplinary conferences, when doctors from several departments review the most complex cases together.

More about the clinic

Helios Schwerin is currently running 56 clinical studies, including 38 related to cancer treatments. They involve more than 50 certified specialty physicians. The four mandated and regulated cancer clinical studies involve, first of all, testing the efficiency of experimental drugs vs. traditional therapies.

Another gem on its staff is doctor Reinhard Bschorer, one of the best plastic and reconstructive surgery experts in Germany, known for his ability to successfully handle the most challenging cases. He was the first to transplant nerves from a thigh area to the face of a patient with a paralysis of face nerves known as the Moebius syndrome. He also became the third physician in the world to perform total nose transplantation.

Recently, the clinic has been certified by the German Spine Society. "This certification ensures compliance with the most stringent quality standards. Among other things, it means that the clinic will avoid unnecessary spine surgeries." - says the department head Oliver Heese.

Efficient communications with patients are very important for the clinic's team. All patients have full access to accurate and transparent information about their diseases, treatment options, and potential risks. The clinic hosts open monthly educational workshops, known as the "Patient Academy" program. These involve lectures and presentations by physicians that share their experience, explain treatment approaches and answer questions. Topics include advanced pain management and breast cancer treatment, prevention, and diagnostics.

History

In the early 19th century, Schwerin, the capital of the northeastern German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, founded the Siegenburg psychiatric clinic located in an estate-like building between two lakes, surrounded by green parks. Nowadays, this is the Friedrich Fleming Clinic, a psychiatric branch of the Helios network.

In 1974, a large municipal clinic was opened near the Sagsenberg clinic to promote the Schwein healthcare to a new level. This clinic was originally designed to serve 800 patients, and has quickly grown, along with the Sagsenberg clinic, it terms of medical service quality, infrastructure, medical workplace environment, and research.

The most effective surgeries and procedures

• Cholecystectomy, nephrectomy, prostatectomy: removal of the gallbladder, kidneys, or prostate.

• Bowel resection: partial removal of a bowel section in cancer patients.

• Carotid endarterectomy and carotid stenting: surgical procedures on the carotid artery.

• Percutaneous coronary interventions: minimally invasive procedures through a small puncture in the skin.

• Hip and knee arthroplasty: replacement of a joint section with an anatomically correct implant, which is able to perform the full range of motion.

• Mandibular osteotomy: surgery on the bone tissue of the jaw to change the form of the facial skeleton.

• Damaged bone tissue excision and resection: excision and removal of the damaged bone tissue with preservation of healthy tissues.

• Arthroscopy: minimally invasive surgery to diagnose and treat internal joint injuries.

Achievements

  • The clinic has been certified by the German Spine Society, and hosts 10 interdisciplinary cancer centers certified by the German Cancer Society.

Services

In 2004, control of 95% of the Sachsenberg hospital was transferred to Helios. The remaining 5% have been retained by the municipality of Schwerin. Thus, three municipal officials sit on the supervisory board, monitor service quality and are involved in decision-making. This updated clinic offers everything patients and their relatives may need, including a cafeteria, shops, an ATM, and foreign language books and magazines.

Location

The clinic is located in the picturesque town of Schwerin in northern Germany, 100 km east of Hamburg. The town has a rich history with many preserved historical monuments. Besides the cultural heritage, Schwerin is distinguished by the natural beauty of its suburbs. The green town is surrounded by six lakes, which makes it perfect for long walks.

You can reach the clinic from the airport within an hour by car.
