The hospital's heart surgeons carry out 600 surgeries every year, with over 98% success rate. The center's ophthalmologists manage to save the eye of 90% of patients diagnosed with retinoblastoma. The clinic also boasts a high survival rate after late-stage cancer surgery, namely of patients diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma. This is the only clinic in Spain that treats neurofibromatosis. The clinic was the first one in Europe to install a bionic arm for a child.
These results are achieved with the help of qualified specialists and a united network of modern equipment. Modern equipment is installed in intensive care units, examination rooms and surgery rooms. Constant monitoring of the child patients' condition helps track any changes in their health.
History
The San Juan de Dios Children's Hospital, named after one of the most venerated saints in Spain, was founded in 1867 under the aegis of the Order of Saint John. The clinic's doctors use decades of experience in their work at the hospital and during missions to African and Latin American countries. During these trips, they provide aid to children that require urgent treatment.
