    History of the clinic

The history of the clinic began in the 17th century: in 1692, the St. Johannes Church was built on donations by Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg Johann Ernst von Thun. His further donations helped open a small hospital. Years later, the church was converted into a full-time hospital.

The hospital underwent radical changes under Dr. Johann Jacob Hartenkeil, who started working at the clinic in 1787. He trained among the best surgeons of the time in Paris and London, and later passed his knowledge to the staff of the hospital in Salzburg. In 1796, he offered to divide the hospital's departments into medical and surgical divisions.

As anesthesiology began to develop, the clinic started to expand even further: the departments of ophthalmology and female medicine were added, and a children's hospital was established.

The expansion of the hospital practically stopped between WWI and WWII. After WWII, the clinic began to develop rapidly. The hospital significantly expanded with the help of its medical staff and the government of Salzburg.
