University Hospital Bonn is a full-service clinic located in the former West German capital. Every year, in serves 383,000 outpatients and 50,000 inpatients.  Its specialized practices employ over 8,000 people, including 1,000 doctors.

The clinic has become known most of all for the newest cancer treatment technologies, such as intensity-modulated (IMRT) and image-guided radiation therapy, intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT), stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), and brachytherapy (LDR and HDR).

More about the clinic

The Bonn University Clinic is home to a joint project of the Aachen, Cologne, Bonn, and Düsseldorf university clinics, known as the Integrated Oncology Center (CIO) that has been certified by the German Cancer Society and the German Cancer Aid Society. CIO completes 600 clinical studies and holds 15 cancer conferences annually. It is home to 26 specialty centers, such as sarcoma, transplantation, lymphoma, breast, intestinal, pulmonary, and liver cancer centers.

The clinic also has several research laboratories. Its radiobiology lab works on optimizing brain radiology procedures, and its hybrid cancer radiology laboratory works on robotic processes and AI integration.

In addition to oncology centers, the clinic has a strong cardiology center. It has been named the best in the region for the last ten years according to Focus magazine. The center treats numerous patients every year; in 2020 alone, it performed 4,109 blood transfusions, 4,106 high-dose beam therapies, and 3,977 hemodialysis procedures.

One notable strength of the Bonn University Clinic is in its extensive use of minimally invasive procedures. According to IQM, the number of minimally invasive organ saving procedures performed at the clinic in 2019 was 15% above the national average.

History of the clinic

The department of medicine was established at the University of Bonn in 1776. The department united the best German, French and Austrian professors.

After WWII, Bonn was made the capital of West Germany, which considerably sped up the development of the university and the clinic.

In 2017, the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases was established at the clinic.

The most successful surgeries and procedures

  • Intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT): an advanced type of radiation therapy used to treat cancer and noncancerous tumors. IMRT uses advanced technology to manipulate photon and proton beams of radiation to conform to the shape of a tumor.
  • Radiotherapy with visual control: control of the patient's position during radiotherapy to avoid damage to healthy tissue.
  • Stereotactic radiation therapy: a type of external radiation therapy that uses special equipment to position the patient and precisely deliver radiation to a tumor.
  • Brachytherapy: a form of radiation therapy where a sealed radiation source is placed inside or next to the area requiring treatment.

Services

The clinic offers top-level services to make sure that the patients' stay is comfortable. There are several shops, a cafe, a chapel and an ATM on the clinic's territory. All rooms have TV and Wi-Fi. Patients can even request a hairdresser visit. The clinic's menu takes into account doctor recommendations and the patients' personal preferences. The clinic regularly organizes exhibitions, concerts and cinema nights for its patients.

Location

Bonn is a historic city in western Germany, not too far from Cologne. It is popular with tourists for its architecture and the cherry blossom district. The clinic is located in the Venusberg district, 15 minutes away from the center of the city. Patients can visit the Kottenforst forest and the Rhein river bank, located not too far from the clinic. The Siebengebirge hill range with the Drachenfels castle is located to the south of the clinic.
