Dresden University Clinic treats more than 400,000 outpatients, and nearly 60,000 inpatients annually. They are helped by a staff of 3,000 professionals, one third of which are physicians in various medical specialty fields.

The clinic is home to 17 unrivaled interdisciplinary centers. These include a kidney and bone marrow transplantation center, and a highly specialized cancer treatment center.

The clinic diagnoses and treats the entire range of vascular diseases, such as atherosclerosis, abdominal and chest aorta aneurysms, vein thrombosis, varicose, lymphatic diseases, functional vascular disorders, inflammatory diseases of large veins and arteries, as well as vascular failures and tumors. In 2005, the vascular health center was certified by the German Society of Angiology and the German Society for Vascular Surgery.

20 highly specialized departments are in charge of specialty fields, from ophthalmology to trauma surgery and nuclear medicine.

History of the clinic

University Hospital Dresden was named after Dr. Carl Gustav Carus, who worked as a gynecologist at the clinic in the 19th century. It was founded as a surgical medical academy in 1815 by Friedrich August I, King of Saxony.

On December 2, 1901, the Town Hospital Dresden-Johannstadt was established with the departments of surgery, internal medicine and ophthalmology. In 1903, the new buildings for the Royal Women’s Clinic were added. The world’s first nursery, founded in 1898 in Dresden by Arthur Schloßmann, moved into the new children's clinic by 1930.

During the air raids of 13th and 14th of February 1945, parts of the hospital were heavily destroyed. The majority of the buildings constructed in 1901 and designed by famous architect Edmund Bräter had to be rebuilt. Today, the campus and its pavilion buildings are under a preservation order.

On September 7, 1954, the Medical Academy within the Johannstadt Hospital was established. From 1954 until 1993, over 6,000 physicians and dentists received their clinical education at the academy.

On October 1, the Medical Academy became integrated as a Faculty of Medicine into the University of Technology Dresden.
