History

The Frankfurt University Hospital was founded in 1914. The modern clinic takes roots in the Sachsenhausen Hospital, which was built in 1884. Dr. Ludwig Rehn, a surgeon who held the first heart surgery in the world in 1896, worked at the hospital, along with renowned dermatologist Karl Gerksheimer.

Many famous researchers and specialists worked at the hospital since its establishment. German chemist Gustav Embden, physician Franz Volhard, as well as neurologist and psychiatrist Karl Kleist worked in the hospital in the first half of the 20th century.

Currently, the university hospital covers an area of about 460,000 square meters, which is comparable to the size of Frankfurt's Old Town. Additional wings were constructed in the 1970s. In 2007, the central building was expanded. Right now, the central building includes an emergency care unit, as well as departments of diagnostics, surgery and intensive care. There is a helicopter pad on the roof of the hospital.
