In 1964, the clinic founded the famous German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) that runs research programs and treats cancers using modern minimally invasive techniques. History of the clinic

The first specialized departments were established at the clinic in the early 20th century under the leadership of innovative surgeons Vincenz Czerny and Karl Heinrich Bauer. Several surgical cuts were named after Czerny. For his part, Bauer became the leading oncologist of his time. Since then, more subdivisions have been added to the clinic's cancer departments.

The National Center for Tumor Diseases cooperates with the German Cancer Research Center, the leading research center in Germany located in Heidelberg. Children's Cancer Center Heidelberg (KiTZ) was established as a result of their cooperation.

In 2009, the Heidelberg Ion-Beam Therapy Center (HIT) was established within the clinic's Radio-Oncology and Radiotherapy Departments. It is the first center of this kind in Germany. HIT has become the first European medical center to introduce proton therapy and heave particle ion therapy: rare cancer treatment methods that have proven effective even in cases previously considered untreatable.
