The Wuppertal clinic is one of the largest in the Helios network. Nearly 100 of its departments and research centers cover all medical specialty fields, work in close cooperation and help specialty doctors stay in touch with their peers from other fields of medicine. The sheer number of unified, tightly integrated medical practices and research centers facilitate productive interdisciplinary cooperation and improve treatment outcomes.

Helios Wuppertal is affiliated with the Witten/Herdecke University. This private, accredited, non-profit university plays an important role in the local economy. Its medical programs are often recommended by such authoritative publications as Der Spiegel, Die Zeit and FAZ. The clinic works in close cooperation with the university and this helps expand the range of innovative treatment methods.

More about the clinic

The clinic's focus is on cancer treatment. Five of its departments have been certified by the German Cancer Society as interdisciplinary cancer centers. This confirms not just the high quality of treatment and compliance with German national standards, but also the fact that medical experts from many different departments work together to reach the best solution for every individual case.

For example, the pancreatic cancer center team includes specialists from such fields as gastroenterology, visceral surgery, endoscopy, beam therapy and nutrition therapy. Clinical trials are yet another important criterion for being certified as a cancer center in Germany. Helios Wuppertal pays special attention to testing new medicines and treatment methods. Right now, it is running six breast cancer and four skin cancer studies.

The clinic and the university host an R&D Department (known as DIR) that brings together research and medical practice resources. The interdisciplinary teams at the DIR go beyond pure research and aim at developing practical innovative applications (such as robotic surgical systems).

Helios Wuppertal is also known for its successes in the fields of orthopedics, prosthetics and spine surgery. Every year, it performs more than 400 knee and hip joint replacements, and its Spine Center has been certified by the German spine health society.
